We will all have seen the various worrying news articles in recent weeks about the RAAC crisis in our schools, and other buildings. Who is to blame for the crisis and how to resolve it are topics that are currently undergoing huge debate, that will no doubt continue for a significant period of time to come.Whilst those debates continue, many of our school clients are facing practical day-to-day challenges in identifying and addressing the risks that RAAC poses. In our Charities Team we advise on academy school conversions and re-brokerings. $100 billion given to charities every year and how can you get some of it…In the UK trusts and foundations only have about £3 billion to share out each year. Whereas in the US it’s $100 billion. So UK-based charities are really missing out on a piece of the American pie!🥧 Here’s how can you get in on this…💰 Firstly, if you don’t have a US entity you’ll need a fiscal sponsor to receive the funds and send them on to you. CAF USA is one you could look into.🤓 There are over 80,000 grantmaking foundations in the USA - 10 times the number in the UK - so your prospecting will need to be efficient to say the least!✏️ Then it’s the writing and submitting, which is a similar process to here in the UK apart from you often have to go through a preliminary step by submitting a Letter of Interest (LOI). Recently, Charity Sector or NPOs has been a new interesting area which is worth exploring and analysing. Here are some key statistics about the charity sector in the UK:1. There are approximately160,000 charitiesin the UK, with nearly90%of them having an income below £500k per year.2. The combined income of charities in the UK is about£39 billionper year, which is larger than either the automotive industry or UK universities and about the same as Tesco.3. The voluntary sector contributed approximately£18bnto the UK’s economy in 2020/21, or0.8%of GDP.4. Most charities in the UK are small, with around75%having an income less than £100,000 per year.5. Incredibly sad to hear another fantastic local charity is closing, this time Age UK West Cumbria. One of the new government’s first jobs must be to free up funds for local authorities and to open grant schemes for VCFSE organisations.Charitable donations across the U.K. are down around 30%, with charities facing the same budgetary pressures as other businesses - energy prices, increased to the minimum wage etc. At the same time volunteer numbers are also down as the older generation retire and younger generation are unable to replace them due to their own pressures with longer working hours.Yes there are cases of mismanagement, but these are few and far between - the problem is sector wide and is in urgent need of external intervention, otherwise we face more service closures, more charities going bust, and a move away from person-centred and geographic care.#cumbria #charity #donations #fundraising #vcfse #generalelection

At a time when the UK’s housing is in crisis with local Councils across the country declaring a housing emergency, the Scottish Government announce a £200 million cut to the housing budget. It makes you wonder how Scottish Government’s target of building 110,000 affordable homes by 2032 will be met.How will this choice, made by Scottish Government, impact on the poorest and most vulnerable in our society? People are living in temporary accommodation for far longer and are unable to afford to get onto the property ladder.The consequences to charities providing services within housing will be huge. Many charities are already struggling through the cost of living crisis.
