Trinetra Ganesh Temple Ranthambore

Ranthambore in Rajasthan is known for its tigers, but it also has one of the oldest Ganesh temples. The Trinetra Ganesh Temple Ranthambore is situated within the Ranthambore Fort inside the Ranthambore National Park. The fort dates back to the 13th century. It is a temple that apart from Ganesh as the main deity has his entire family as deities.

The temple is believed to have originated during the rule of King Hameer. Legend has it that the fort was under siege by the forces of Alauddin Khalji. As the battle waged, the King was worried as the supplies inside the fort were depleted. He was a devotee of Lord Ganesh, who appeared in his dream and assured him, that by morning all his problems would be solved. The battle ended in the morning, and the symbol of Trinetra Ganesh was found embedded inside the fort.

The Arulmigu Uchchi Pillaiyar Temple, also popularly known as Rock Fort temple is located in the city of Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. The temple stands aloft a 273 feet high rock which also has an ancient fort known as Rock Fort. There are two temples on top of the fort, one is the temple dedicated to Ganesh known as Ucchi Pillayar Temple and the other is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are many legends around both the temples regarding its origin. Historically the temple dates back to the 6th century when the region was ruled by the Pallava kings.

Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple, Chittoor

The Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple is located in a village called Kanipakam about 11 kilometres from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The village is about 68 kilometres from the famous temple town of Tirupati.

A fascinating legend surrounds the origin of the temple. It is said that there were three brothers who lived in the village. One of them was blind, another dumb, while the last one was deaf. They eked out their living cultivating a small field to which water was supplied from a well. One day to their dismay they found that the well had dried up. They tried to dig with an axe which stuck something solid. Soon blood started flowing out and they were cured of their disabilities.

They had discovered a Ganesh idol inside the well. They dug deeper to get to the base of the idol, but could not. The temple is at that very spot, and the idol is inside the well. Water flows from the well perenially.

Maha Ganapathy Temple, Gokarna

Gokarna is well known for its beaches, the famous Mahabaleshwar temple, and the nearby Mirjan Fort. On the way to the Mahabaleshwar temple, stands a small Ganesh temple, which is the Mahaganapathy temple of Gokarna.

Legend has it that when Ravana was proceeding to Lanka with Shiva’s Atmalinga, Lord Ganesh in the guise of a small boy tricked him into keeping the Atmalinga on the ground. The Atmalinga hence stayed at the same place forever and in course of time the famous temple of Gokarna Mahabaleshwara was built over it.

A temple was built as a tribute to the efforts of Ganesh to ensure that the Atmalinga did not reach Lanka with the demon king Ravana. That is the Mahaganapathy Temple of Gokarna.
