The BS ECECSNon Teacher Certificate Track is a 100% online competency-based program. Competency-Based Education (CBE) programs enable students to earn college credit by demonstrating mastery of clearly defined skills. Students work with the program’s faculty advisor who ensures that students have obtained the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workplace.

What are the admissions criteria?

Completion of Associate Degree from STC. Admission is restricted to Texas Residents.

Who qualifies for this degree program?

Completion of Associate Degree at South Texas College (STC). Completion of 10 courses at STC (considered as electives):

1.TECA 1303 Family, School, and Community2.TECA 1311 Educating Young Children

3.TECA 1318 Wellness of the Young Child4.TECA 1354 Child Growth and Development

5.EDUC 1301 Introduction to Teaching6.EDUC 1300 Learning Frameworks

How many coursescan a student take per semester?

Starting Fall 2022, all 15 courses will be offered every semester and students can take as many as 4 per 7-week module.

How do the modules work?

Each course is offered within a 7-week module and comprises of 5 to 7 competencies that must be mastered. Each competency area has a list of readings, lectures, activities, and quizzes that need to be completed. Students can advance through these competencies at their own pace. There is a hard start and finish date for each module but a student can start and finish at any point during the 7-week timeframe. At the end of each course, there is a comprehensive POSTTEST, which must be passed with an 80% or higher for the student that have successfully completed the course.

What are possible careers?

HeadStart, Ninos, Private Daycares and Learning centers, Child protective Services, Easterseals, shelters for unaccompanied or separated immigrant minors, Idea Public schools, Private schools, Para-professionals in Independent School Districts.

To prepare highly skilled professionals to assume roles and positions in teaching, research, educational leadership, and human development to contribute to the educational achievement of all young children ages birth to 8 years in early childhood settings including classrooms.
